Cynden Frasier (Cyn) is a member of a group of immortal warriors, the Protectors, assigned to protect humans in Atlanta, Georgia, the epicenter of a major uprising in demon activity. When Cyn is approached by a beautiful woman in a dirty alley, he is intrigued by the fact that she can see him for what he is, a terrifying demon slayer, and still dares to approach him.
Emma Blake, a half-demon, has to convince Cyn to help rescue her sister from powerful demons. Terrified that the Protector will kill her if he realizes what she is, she still goes against every instinct and approaches Cyn for help. Despite knowing that she is leading them both into territory so wrought with treachery, neither of them may survive.
Can Cyn and Emma overcome betrayal, the ancient rules that prevent Protectors from taking a wife, unless she is his one true mate? And if they do, will it even matter?
I enjoyed the premise of this book. A group of immortal warriors that protect humans from demon threats. They were from different walks of life, but all were hot as sin and willing to do pretty much whatever it took to protect the human race.
As the story starts, Emma Blake is desperate to get Cyn Frasier to help her save her sister from the master demon who has kidnapped her. She even dangles information about his missing friend, Roderick, still being alive hoping that would convince him to help her. But what she doesn’t share is that she’s half demon and that she’s being forced to lure Cyn into helping her in order to save both her sister’s and her life.
What neither Cyn and Emma counted on was their attraction to each other or Cyn discovering Emma’s deception in hopes of saving the remaining family member she has.
Trust is a big issue between Cyn and Emma. Cyn can’t let go of what she did in the hope of saving her sister. Even when Emma declares her love and understanding about why he may hate her, he still can’t trust those feelings. It’s not until Emma does the unthinkable to save his son that he understands how far she’s willing to go for those she loves.
The only thing I wish we got was a little more backstory about the Protectors and how they came to be. We have Spartans, Romans, Highlanders and British Aristocracy in the mix of Protectors we met in this book. How did these warriors come to be? How many are there? And why are demons roaming the earth? Hopefully these are answers we’ll get in future books.
If you’re a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters series, this is a book that will right up your alley.
