Seven years of longing comes down to just one night.
Laney Kent returns to Barrier Shoals hoping to reunite with her first love, Bridger. She anticipates his reception might be chilly, but what she doesn’t expect is to become the victim of a deadly obsession … or that this night with Bridger could be her last.
Bridger Jansen tangled a lot of sheets trying to forget about Laney, but his heart knew what the rest of him refused to admit: he could love no one else. He’s determined not to forgive her for leaving him without explanation, but when he fails to protect her from a viscous attack, the person he can’t forgive just might be himself.
Lacey Kent left Barrier Shoals seven years ago to go to college. She left behind Bridger Jansen, asking that he wait for her. When she heard he was keeping company with other women, she figured he’d moved on. Unfortunately, Bridger wasn’t the only thing she left in Barrier Shoals. After all this time, she’s decided she left her heart there as well. Determined to see if what she still feels for Bridger is returned, she heads the thirty miles to Barrier Shoals.
Bridger Jansen has been brooding for the past seven years. He’s never loved anyone other than Lacey Kent, but when she never came back he figured she had moved on. No one was more shocked than Bridger when he finds her in his lighthouse. While he initially asks her to leave, the moment he hears her scream he knows no matter what happened in the past, he needs her now and in the future.
Just as Lacey and Bridger appear to be on the path back to each other, they are brutally attacked in Bridger’s home. Will they be able to survive and live within the familiar light of Bridger’s beloved lighthouse?
This short story moves fast and has you asking many questions by the time you get to the climax biting your nails: Is Bridger dead as Lacey had been told? Can Lacey survive as her attacker removes her from the cottage? And is the attacker someone Lacey knows or is something more going on?
Sarah Ballance does a brilliant job of sucking you into this story and moving it along in a few sort pages. The only problem, is when you do get the the end you got there so fast your wondering how that happened and if there is a way to make it longer.
I wanted more of Bridger and Lacey. What had they been doing in the seven years apart? What drove Lacey to come back? Why didn’t Bridger after come after her instead of waiting?
Despite wanting more, it truly was a quick, fast-paced, read that easily made waiting for my son to get out of school fly by.
