Shirlene Dalton has it all: a dream marriage to a man who spoils her rotten and the most outrageous mansion Bramble, Texas, has ever seen. But when her husband unexpectedly dies, Shirlene finds herself right back where she started-in a rundown trailer on the wrong side of the tracks. Never the type to let a little bad luck and a whole heap of heartache get her down, Shirlene is ready to prove to the local gossips she can make it on her own… until she ends up living next door to the most tempting cowboy in town.
Billy Wilkes has a score to settle and a plan to wipe Bramble right off the map. But when his sexy, redheaded neighbor figures out what he’s up to, his good ol’ boy charm won’t be enough to save him. With the town on his tail, Billy will have to come clean quick — or kiss Shirlene goodbye.
I will admit, I haven’t read the first two book in this series, but that didn’t make this one any less charming.
Shirlene Dalton, after the death of her husband and a bit of compulsive spending, finds herself back in the trailer she grew up in. It’s a long, hard fall for a woman who made sure she married well so she never had to go without again. Normally she’d turn to her friends and/or brother to help dig her out of the mess, but this time she bound and determined to do it on her own…if only she could get the new bank manager, Mr. Cates, to cut her a break.
Billy “Bubba” Wilkes has been living in Bramble, Tx under false pretenses for the past year. While the good folks of the town think he doesn’t do much but fish he’s actually on a mission (along with his brothers) to make those at fault for killing his great, great, great grandfather pay. And by those at fault, they mean the entire town. But forcing the town’s largest employer to go under and kicking the richest widow out of her home hasn’t helped Billy get his revenge. In fact, it’s forced him into close quarters with the one woman who can throw a wrench in all their plans.
This was a cute story with characters that make you laugh. Shirlene and Billy’s arguing and name calling were the highlight to this story. Every time Billy put on his “good ole boy” face, you just knew he was going to work Shirlene up and the sparks and insults were soon going to fly.
It was nice to see two characters learn from their mistakes and try to turn things around. They didn’t blame anyone else or wallow in self pity, but instead took steps to change their circumstances.
The orphans and the residents of Bramble round out this story. They were an interfering lot, but they were looking out for one of their own, and that endears readers to them.
