It’s a desperate time for rookie vampire Alyssa, and her sanity is hanging by a slender thread. Her clan is still reeling from the monumental battle with Aniketos; a battle that claimed the body of Lysander, her sire and lover, and trapped his spirit in a mysterious crystal. A Soulstone.
Unfortunately, no amount of magic has been able to release Lysander’s spirit, and the stone is starting to fade. Weeks of effort have proved futile. Her clan, the Peregrinus, have all but given up hope. Only Alyssa still believes her lover can be released. In despair, Alyssa begs the help of the local witch coven, and unwittingly exposes the supernaturals of Boston to unwanted attention from the Acta Sanctorum.
The Saints converge on the city and begin their cleansing crusade to rid the world of all things “Unnatural.” In the middle of an all-out war, but no closer to a solution to the dying stone, Alyssa is left with an unenviable choice: save her mate, or save her clan.
When we last left Lysander and Alyssa, they thought they had managed to capture Aniketos (the first evil vampire who had been imprisoned in Pandora’s Box), but instead that Lysander was grievously injured in a fire and his soul is now in the crystal, which is discovered to be a soulstone.
It takes Alyssa, Nicholas, Drew, Crystal and their alliance with the wolves to find a way to save Lysander from the Acta Sanctorum who are determined to use the soulstone in their evil plans to rid the world of supernatural beings.
While I missed the interactions between Lysander and Alyssa, this was Alyssa’s moment to shine. For the first time in the series, she didn’t have her beloved there to save her from whatever disaster she got herself into. It was Alyssa who never lost determination in finding a way to save Lysander and who went to whatever lengths it took to get the soulstone containing Lysander back after the Acta Sanctorum took it. And while other members of her coven may have doubted Alyssa in the past, this was her time to earn their respect.
In my opinion, this is the best entry in the series so far. I can’t wait to see what is next for our group, because the Acta Sanctorum has a lot to answer for.

I agree. I love the previous three books in the series, but thought the same as you. Alyssa really shined on her own this time. The only think missing in this book that was in the others was Katie’s well written love making scenes. Damn!
I completely agree, Dana! Maybe Katie will make it up to us in the next one!
Informative post!
I adore Katie’s books and her lovemaking scenes really draw readers into those moments.
