Adam and Sophie Dean’s good-enough marriage could easily have lasted forever. But Adam succumbs to pressure from his mistress to leave Sophie, and in the course of his carefully prepared farewell speech, Sophie has a revelation: unless she leaves him in the family home in the role of primary caregiver, he’ll have a severely diminished role in the lives of their two sons.

So while Adam continues to live in the suburban house he despises-with his two children and his angry mistress, who’d never planned for this turn of events-Sophie sets out alone into an alluring new life nearby, close enough to see her sons every day, but far removed from her former life of domestic drudgery. As she and Adam grow into their new roles, they discover what it actually means to act in their children’s best interests, and that the end of a marriage can be a beginning.

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

Leaving Sophie Dean was a funny evolution of a relationship. Even with serious issues as marriage and infidelity, the characters are fun and entertaining. When Sophie Dean finds that her husband is leaving her and her two children, for his mistress, she throws a wrench in his plans. She leaves him, leaving him with their two children. This part of the story really threw me off in the beginning. Was she leaving her kids for good? Was she going to see them at all? I didn’t know. Adam, the father and Valerie, the mistress are stunned by their new roles as primary caretakers to Adams kids. Β Adam, not knowing β€œwhat to do” with his children and Valerie, who β€œdidn’t sign up for this”, make for great comedy. Β As Sophie Dean moves to an apartment where her children visit after school and on weekends, she reclaims her identity and her life, and keeps us laughing.

Alexandra Whitaker’s Leaving Sophie Dean is an interesting, witty read. Β I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great dialogues between all characters involved, and for that reason, I highly recommend it.
