Reviewer’s Thoughts:

First and foremost I want to point out that this is book 5 in The World of Ascension series. Unless you want to be thoroughly confused for the first half of the book, do not start with this book. What could have been great enjoyment on my part was dampened by appearances of secondary characters that are obviously important in the scheme of the story as a whole. However, their appearance only served to confuse me more.

Obsidian Flame has a pretty strong beginning. Thorne is in a smoky bar watching as the woman he loves is putting the moves on another man. Marguerite knows Thorne is there, that he’s watching, hell, she can even smell is unique cherry tobacco scent. She just doesn’t care. After year years of being imprisoned, she just wants to be free and basically to sleep her way through the male population on Mortal Earth. After all, she’s got decades to make up for. You feel for our heroine, you really do. At least you do until she opens her mouth. Then she just comes across as selfish and self-centered. Luckily, she does learn to put her own selfish needs of bed hopping her way through the country aside for the greater good of saving the world, both Mortal Earth and Second Earth, from a tyrannical maniac bent on ruling it.

Thorne seems like the complete opposite. He’s thoughtful, caring and loves her enough to understand that she needs her freedom and unfortunately that freedom includes other men. For her he’s willing to look the other way even though what he really wants to do is kill every man that so much as looks at Marguerite. Apart they are uniquely strong, but together they are a force to be reckoned with.

Once you get past the obvious romance and what at times seems like a love/hate relationship between our two main characters, you get to the truly good part. We have the battle between good and evil, good vampires, death vampires, spies, and different dimensions, just to name some. This is a sci-fi fan’s dream come true!

If you’re considering reading this book, and let’s face it, if you’re a fan of the paranormal or science fiction, you’ll want to read it after reading the synopsis alone, I would definitely go for it. However, I would definitely suggest reading the series in order.
