THERE’S A FOX IN THE HENHOUSE

Inheriting the most notorious house of ill repute in Texas can spell trouble for a girl’s reputation . . . especially when she’s Elizabeth Murphy, Bramble’s prim and proper librarian. Yet when she discovers a buck-naked cowboy handcuffed to a four-poster bed, she forgets all about the town gossips. Elizabeth has sworn off men, but the stranger’s kisses melt her resolve faster than ice cream on a hot summer day.

Waking up in Miss Hattie’s Henhouse isn’t how Brant Cates reckoned on getting to the bottom of his great-granddaddy’s murder. The plan was to solve the centuries-old crime, then get the heck out of Dodge. But after meeting Elizabeth and discovering that the buttoned-up beauty is a sexy siren in disguise, he just can’t pull himself away.

Now Brant needs Elizabeth to finally put his past to rest, but is she willing to risk her future on Bramble’s newest bad boy?

Reviewer’s Thoughts:

The prim and proper town librarian of Bramble, Texas has a secret. She’s the new, not so proud owner of an infamous whorehouse. Elizabeth Murphy doesn’t know how she ended up inheriting the infamous Miss Hattie’s Henhouse or what to do with the three octogenarian β€œhens” still inhabiting the house. But between trying to sell the house and thwarting the hens, that are determined to restore Miss Hattie’s to its former glory and reopening for business, she’s finding it pretty hard to keep her secret. Enter Brant Cates on the hunt for the truth of his grandfather’s murder and you have just one more unwanted complication for Elizabeth.

If I had to choose something that I did not enjoy or would change, it would have to be the mysterious murder. There was such a build up about the importance of finding out the truth, how it affected the hero and his interactions with the town of Bramble. Yet the end result was pretty anti-climactic. That being said, reading this book brought the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds, to mind more than once. Being a visual type of person I pictured a couple of the more entertaining ladies of the house as I read on and couldn’t help but laugh my way through most of the book. Everyone needs a Minnie to keep his or her life from getting boring. With lively characters, a pseudo mystery and enough sparks between Brant and Lizzie to cause spontaneous combustion, how could I not enjoy it and recommend it to anyone needing a good laugh?

Although the fourth book in the series, Trouble in Texas makes a wonderful standalone book. Starting at book four though made me want to go out and read the previous three books to see if they’re just as entertaining.Β
