Review: Mercy’s Debt – Sloan Archer

After graduating from the prestigious Dewhurst University, Mercy Montgomery finds herself in a bit of financial trouble: over $108,000 worth of financial trouble, in fact. Reviewer’s Thoughts:

The beginning of the book was a bit slow and I didn’t really care for the relationship between Mercy and her roommate Liz, but once Mercy became a companion with Dignitary the story did pick up. I ended up enjoying the book and not wanting it to end.

Mercy graduates from a private university in San Francisco with a mountain of late debt. When she mets the elusive Michael, in a bar after she wins a wet t-shirt contest, he offers her the opportunity to make more money than she could ever imagine. Leary at first, Mercy decides to meet with Michael and his wife to find out just what working at Dignitary would entail. She didn’t plan on vampires, evil lurking in the shadows or being cut to the bone by betrayal.

Mercy was a hard character to get into. She had an odd quality to her that just didn’t seem to jive with Liz and I couldn’t figure out why. It wasn’t until she had her first “date” with Michael that I realized Mercy has an old soul and with that, she just didn’t make sense with anyone of her generation. Once she was with vampires, especially Robert, that she became a character I was emotionally invested in and wanted to see her get over all the crap in her life (with her ginormous debt and deadbeat ex) to find her happily ever after.

Robert was someone you love from the minute he appears on the page. He was someone who just wanted someone to like him. Not the vampire him or the wealthy CEO, just him. For someone who confessed to keeping himself closed off from others, he was an amazingly open book with Mercy and showed her that not all men are like her ex.

I’m invested in this story/series now and look forward to reading the next book. The characters were charming, with an old world feel, that has me anxiously waiting to see what happens next.
