Reviewer’s Thoughts
Striking Distance by Pamela Clare is a story of survival and perseverance with a healthy dose of romance. Javier Corbray and TV Reporter Laura Nilsson, nicknamed the Baghdad Babe, once shared a wild weekend in Dubai, but whatever relationship they could have had was cut short after Laura’s crew was ambushed and everyone was believed dead. Laura is not dead, and after being discovered after eighteen months in captivity, she still continues to struggle rebuilding her life two years following her initial rescue. Javier Corbray was one of the members of the Navy SEAL team who discovered Laura, and her rescue haunts and stirs his protective instincts. Will they have a new chance at a relationship when they meet again?
The story begins two years following the initial rescue, with Laura finally getting what she believes is closure to her harrowing ordeal. Although she now works in Denver and has made new friends, she still continues to hold herself back. Javier and Laura meet again at a mutual friend’s house, and they try to see if there is anywhere to go from their previous relationship. Although Laura is reluctant to begin a relationship with a man, she turns to Javier for help when she starts to receive threats of her life. Both soon realize that they have to find the reason behind her initial kidnapping if they want to forge a new future.
Pamela Clare does a good job of writing about Laura’s journey of rediscovery, and presents a strong woman who continues to struggle with the horrendous ordeal she experienced. Javier displays extreme patience, seeming to know how to help Laura overcome both her problems as a result of her ordeal as well as helping with her current threats. Pamela Clare has truly written an amazing story- it will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and keep you rooting for their happy ever after.
