Reviewer’s Thoughts
When an author takes a historical and mixes in a little mythology, I get really excited! I love Greek and Roman mythology, and this story plays on the Romans and their very colorful history. From the beginning, the author paints a beautiful picture – one that the reader can easily get lost in. She brilliantly weaves historical detail with fantasy, never weighing the story down with too much history – making it an escape rather than a teaching tool.
The hero and heroine in the book were created with strong personalities similar to those in Roman mythology. Tenacious, stubborn, courageous – both Alaric and Diana possess these qualities, and yet both still exhibit vulnerability – a “mortal” personality trait. Alaric is a warrior – which also makes him a hard bodied, dream of a man. And Diana is beautiful, and at times written to be what one could consider exotic.
And naturally, a story of this caliber would not be complete without a great romance. Alaric and Diana are two characters that were made for one another. Their similarities and their differences make for a perfect match. But what brings out the romantic in them both, is when they’re both placed in a precarious situation of survival where they must learn to trust one another – where they both find themselves falling in love.
I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the action, the history, the sacrifice and most importantly, the love. This author knows how to write a beautiful story, and I’m so glad I was lucky enough to have gotten a hold of this one.
