Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.
Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless by the denizens of her hometown, but she’s finally turned it all around—she’s happily engaged to the local veterinarian and she’s become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything’s fine and dandy—until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town’s first murder case. Of course, the troublesome cowboy’s rugged good looks and T-shirt-straining muscles are already leaving Laney knee-deep in hot water, but she’ll be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf. She’s decided that, instead of conflict, she wants a contented, steady life with her vet—a life in which Gunner Wilson and his seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido plays no part. Still, it’s hard to keep her head as forbidden sparks ignite and suspicions arise between old rivals and old flames. And when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand—and a truce in exchange for his help. But after uncovering the pack of lies surrounding not only her job but her heart… Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but it’s certainly the most reckless, and Laney has always been pretty reckless…

Reviewer’s Thoughts
PRETTY RECKLESS is a rousing, funny story. Gunner Wilson is a hunky, Texas Ranger and was Laney Brigg’s boyfriend until she caught him in bed with another woman five years ago. After the incident, Gunner left town and never returned. Five years later, Laney isn’t happy when Gunner returns to Pistol Rock, Texas. Laney a tough and spunky woman is now engaged to Nathan, the town’s veterinarian. Gunner’s in town working on a case, but he is also trying to win Laney back, so he is constantly making negative comments about Nathan and flirting with Laney. There’s still a strong chemistry between the two of them, although Laney tries to ignore it. Gunner wants Laney to see he is the man for her, but she doesn’t trust Gunner and doesn’t want her heart broken again. Laney is working as a deputy and she and Gunner are constantly thrown together as they try to solve a case. It seems someone is selling drugs in town and killing anyone who tries to get in their way. The plot isn’t predicable and I was never sure who the bad guys were until the very end. Unfortunately, the men in this story aren’t always nice. They don’t treat Laney well and she’s beaten up a few times, ouch. I’m still not sure why Gunner cheated on Laney and some of the sarcastic barbs he throws her way are down right, mean. This story has a little bit of everything including mystery, humor and romance. There are a lot of quirky characters living in the small town of Pistol Rock, Texas, which makes for some funny moments and very little privacy.
