Reviewer’s Thoughts

Single by Saturday is the fourth book in Catherine Bybee’s Weekday Brides series.  This book can be read as a standalone, but there are characters from the previous books that are prominent in this book.  The heroine, Karen was the director of a facility in the first book, Wife by Wednesday. She is the best friend of the main character in Bybee’s novel Fiance’ by Friday.   That book also contains information on how Karen and Michael meet.  So readers of the series see the progression of characters and how they are selected to have their own story.

Karen has such a huge heart.  You start loving her in the previous books.  I wish she could have been my best friend.  She gave of herself unselfishly to everyone in her life.  Even though Michael was a huge Hollywood star he was genuinely one of the good guys.  He was loving, supportive, and protective of Karen and her feelings.  Karen and Michael had an arranged marriage so Karen could act as Michael’s beard and shield him from being exposed as a homosexual.  They enjoyed each other’s company, and I hoped that maybe it would develop into a happily ever after between the two of them.

Michael and Karen were not only loving and protective of each other but also of their families and friends.  Michael’s close-knit family closed ranks by sending his brother Zach to meet the new bride.  They also wanted Zach to bring the couple back to Utah to meet the entire family.  Interestingly Karen has feelings that have nothing to do with being Zach’s sister-in-law.  This is a full-fledged strong attraction to the brother of her husband.   Now what is a do-right girl like Karen to do when she wants more than brotherly love from Zach?  And Zach is fighting an attraction that is just a strong for Karen.  Though they love Michael and their family nothing can keep Karen and Zach away from each other.  The author does an excellent job of communicating Zach and Karen’s feelings without making you feel that their attraction is dirty and disloyal.  I loved the way she constantly brought the focus back to family, love, and loyalty.  Michael’s family was nothing if not colorful, and I enjoyed reading about them so much that I agonized over hurting or disappointing them.  I had to keep reminding myself that this was just a novel.

This was a great rollercoaster ride with lots of twists and turns emotionally and enough humor to make you want to jump back on the ride again.  I loved the book, and I think I will read it again…yes, it’s that good.
