Tara Jean Dobbs was a Texas police officer until her friend Lucy Caldwell almost died on her watch. She’s since left the force, left Dobbs Hollow, and vowed to never let a loved one down again. So when her best friend Andrea joins a seemingly harmless spiritual cult—only to disappear without a trace—Tara decides to find out what happened by becoming one of the Chosen herself.
Five months later, no one’s heard from Tara, and FBI Agent Jacob Nolan is going after her. Taking a false identity, Jacob finds it surprisingly easy to play the part of Tara’s boyfriend. But as they uncover the inner workings of the Chosen, they realize how much danger they’re in. Because Andrea isn’t the first follower to conveniently disappear—and they may be next.

Reviewer’s Thoughts
Cults fascinate me, so I jumped at this book. I wanted to see how a cult could play a role in a story, and I really enjoyed this story. The cult was like a living breathing character especially since both Tara and Jacob had to move around and secretly find quiet, unmonitored places to talk about what was going on.
Tara and Jacob knew each other outside of the cult, so there is some of that dynamic, and they were falling in love under strained circumstances and while being under strict surveillance. So it does seem like it might not last, but I think it will because these two are meant for each other.
This story is full of action and the plot is intricate and moves quickly. I definitely was kept guessing at who was really in charge and what was really going on. It isn’t actually fully resolved at the end of the story, which I didn’t really like. Also, Tara is put through some serious torture by the bad guys, so that was a bit hard to read, however, it did fit the story and the plot so it wasn’t just gratuitous violence.
I do recommend this story, and I will be keeping an eye on this author. She definitely impressed me with her writing style and her ability to construct a complex plot that had me on the edge of my seat.
