Review: Her Ancient Hybrid – Marisa Chenery

Brolach is old. Ancient. A hybrid, half vampire and half werewolf, he’s a true immortal who can never die. He’s lived for three thousand years, but has slept buried for two of them. Physically threatened by her ex-boyfriend while out on a hike in the grasslands has unexpected results for Waverly. A man, muddy and covered in dirt, explodes out of the ground to rescue her. After he turns into a wolf and chases off her ex, she soon loses it when he turns his attention to her.

With the help of Waverly, Brolach adjusts to the new world he’s awakened in to. The new life he sets about making with his mate is soon threatened by one of the vampires who’d killed his family and had buried him alive.

Reviewer’s Thoughts

Her Ancient Hybrid gives us an interesting concept. Not only was Brolach born to a Vampire mother but also he is a vampire/werewolf hybrid. Buried alive for over 2000 years, he awakens to the screams of Waverly who is being stalked by her persistent ex boyfriend. From that point on, Her Ancient Hybrid moves at an incredibly fast pace. Normally this wouldn’t bother me, as I knew before I picked this novella up that it was short. However, I felt that too much is sped through for the insistence of the author to keep this story short. Too often we find stories that could be fantastic 5 star books being crammed into a small number of pages. Unfortunately I feel this was the case here.

I do not know if this is this author’s style of writing as this was only the second book I’ve ever read by this author, but when you have the hero telling the heroine that he doesn’t want to pressure her into making a decision of being turned, then in the next breath tells her that he will not have sex with her again unless she decides to turn, I don’t know about you, but that to me smacks of pressure. He starts the mating process without her consent. There are just points during this short read that, regardless of the fact that he was buried alive for 2000 years, the hero really isn’t very likeable. Perhaps if it the story had been longer and the readers were given the opportunity to get to know Brolach it would be different. However, as is, even though it has great promise, it just didn’t quite do it for me. It felt too rushed and too many small details were left up in the air. There was so much potential in the storyline that wasn’t reached. Had it been a longer book, I have no doubt the author would have definitely surpassed my expectations.
