Reviewer’s Thoughts
FLY had elements that I always enjoy in a good story: a hero who is destined to fall hard, despite what he ways, a heroine who’s afraid of being hurt by the hero and it didn’t hurt that the hero was a pilot. But as I read the story of Ben and Skye, I found myself not loving either character, but not disliking them either.
Ben “Bolt” Hardcastle is a marine fighter pilot who’s used to flying fast, both in his job and when he deals with women. He’s a love’em and leave’em type who have never apologized for who he was. But when he mets Skye Stephens, by chance, and she doesn’t fall immediately for his charms, Ben finds himself doing what he can to prove himself to her. There were times when Ben would rise above and do something that made me think he was the man for Skye. To prove to her that he was more than sex and could be there for her. But then he would say or do something that had me smacking my head, making me wonder why she bothered.
Skye was a tough woman. She had a job that didn’t value women the same way it did men which all fed into her feelings that no man could ever be what she needed. So was determined to be self sufficient and at times came across as pretty cold. Stepping out of her character and bringing Ben home that first night was the first glimpse at the woman she could be, if she let go. But she fought against what she truly wanted and who she thought she needed to be. That times meant she fought against how she was feeling towards Ben too.
Together, these two were very hot when their own personal demons didn’t get in the middle of them. I think if their characters had a bit more time to develop their relationship (after they figured out what they wanted) I would have liked them a bit more. Towards the end of the story seemed rushed and made the final chapters seem a bit unrealistic…at least to me.
A solid effort and not a bad story. There were elements I enjoyed, but I really wanted those characters to develop more and make their relationship seem more realistic.
