Thom McDoffrey is shocked when he’s waylaid outside camp by Kaiser, the strange warrior he’d fought a few nights before. He listens as Kaiser speaks of treasure and adventure and freedom. Being the youngest son of a known thief, Thom has worked diligently to live honorably, choosing the hard life of a mercenary in Chieftain Goth’s employ. This, however, is an opportunity too good to pass up. Especially when Kaiser promises that the treasure would be freely given, because the owner needs a boon. Giving in to temptation, Thom agrees. Upon arriving in Karstelle Valley, Thom discovers that he is the boon…Kaiser is completing the favor of bringing a human to a dragon. Feeling betrayed, Thom flees. When the dragon tracks him down, will Thom give in to curiosity, see why the dragon wants him, or keep running?

Reviewer’s Thoughts
I read this series out of order, and for that reason, I can say this works as a stand-alone. Thom is lured away by Kaiser with a promise of a great treasure, so Thom goes, and finds a dragon that calls him mate at the end of that journey. In some ways it’s really the beginning of the journey for Thom as he has to reevaluate and relearn his way in the new world opened up by the existence of dragons.
I loved the dragon, Glarzy, he was a fun character who you could tell really liked Thom and found him sexy. Thom has had thoughts about men before, but never been with one, and Glarzy is really patient with him.
Overall the premise of highland dragons works, it’s a quick read that has interesting characters, a well fleshed out world and a storyline that worked with these characters. I could see revisiting this world in the future.
