Past Heaven was a touching book and not super predictable, which I appreciate. Ward did a commendable job portraying Liz as the grieving widow trying to find a “new normal” after the sudden loss of her husband. I think all of us like to think that our beloved movie stars are as down-to-earth (while still being drop dead gorgeous) as Reynolds is portrayed as well! Their story is pure fantasy, but still plausible.
Liz is still young when her husband, an activist for people with special needs, dies suddenly. She is left with three young boys and the legacy her husband began. Reynolds is living a shallow, Hollywood existence and is not satisfied with that lifestyle anymore. He hears about Liz & Jack’s story and decides to write a screenplay based on their lives.
Through working on the screenplay & subsequent movie, Liz and Reynolds become close. He comes to care about her and her boys, as he is not a shallow Hollywood-type at all. He starts to realize what is important in life at the same time Liz starts to heal from her loss and begins to see that she deserves happiness.
Ward is able to tell this story without being too “sappy”. I appreciated all of the references to helping people with special needs, being a teacher of such people myself. I thought Ward spoke for them with compassion and dignity. I also liked the thought that maybe some “Hollywood-types” ARE real people who want what we all want-to be loved by someone real that we can trust.
LAURA WARD is the author of PAST HEAVEN and the New Adult novel, NOT YET. She lives in Maryland with her loud and very loving three children and husband. Laura married her college sweetheart and is endlessly grateful for the support he has given her through all their years together, and especially toward her goal of writing books. When not picking up toy trucks, driving to lacrosse practice, or checking spelling homework, Laura is writing or reading romance novels.
