When Lilly Ferguson narrowly avoids being mugged after work, she's shocked to find that she's gotten the attention of Talan McKenna. He's the sinfully handsome owner of the Foxwood Casino and Spa where she works. There's only one problem, though... Talan is one of the Transfigured. Like half a million others across the globe, he possesses a very specific genetic mutation. It leaves him with the inability to age, an aversion to sunlight, and a thirst for human blood. When he learns of her tragic past, he worries that it's an obstacle he'll never be able to overcome. Despite her heartbreaking history with the Transfigured, Lilly immediately senses that Talan is different. Where her fears once lay, there's only a sense of peace and comfort. Just as they begin to build a love made to last several lifetimes, a shadowy figure from her past emerges and threatens to destroy everything.
The Darkness Calls is the first book in The Transfigured One’s series by Michelle Roth.
Lilly Ferguson is a hard working student with a job at the Foxwood Casino and Spa. She has plans for her future and seems to know what she wants to do next. Lilly’s past with the Transfigured is tragic, but she does not let her past color her view of the Transfigured in general. I loved her personality and how she did not hold back with Talan.
Talan McKenna is a transfigured. He has been around for several hundred years. He is cursed with the inability to age, aversion to sunlight, and thirst for human blood. Talan is very down to earth, and does not see himself as better than those around him.
The connection between Lilly and Talan is intense. I loved that while they would normally never cross paths, they can’t stay away from the other. I also enjoyed that Talan was aware that Lilly was not interested in his money. They make a great couple, and Lilly does not let her past color her future.
I found this book well written with a unique plot. The main characters and the secondary characters were fascinating. While the ending was predictable, it liked that this story had twists and turns that kept me hooked all the way through. I had a hard time putting this book down. Overall, this was a very captivating book and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
