Emily McCarthy is living in fear of a dark and dangerous past. A gifted mathematician, she is little more than a hollow, broken shell, trying desperately to make ends meet long enough to finish her degree. Through an unlikely friendship with the aging, cantankerous owner of an old boxing gym, Em is thrown into the path of the most dangerous man that she has ever met. Cormac βthe Hurricaneβ OβConnell is cut, tattooed and dangerous. He is a lethal weapon with no safety and everyone is waiting for the mis-fire. Heβs never been knocked out before, but when he meet Em he falls, HARD. Unlike any other girl heβs ever met, she doesnβt want anything from him. Just being around her makes him want to be a better person. They are polar opposites who were never meant to find each other, but some things are just worth the fight. ***Warning*** This book contains adult language and subject matter, including some flashback scenes of abuse and rape, that may be disturbing for some readers. This book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.
I wasnβt quite sure what to expect from The Hurricane, but what I got was a wonderful love story. We meet Emily as she is working as a waitress at a diner in London and struggling to go to college. She has escaped a horrific home situation and is surviving by keeping her head down and trying to be invisible. We follow Emily as she makes her first friends and begins to come out of her shell; a new job leads her to spending time with a bunch of burly boxers, especially Cormack (Con) OβConnell.
Con has just as much baggage as Emily and watching the two together is wonderful. The author does a fantastic job of weaving together their story so that we see them grow personally and as a couple. Even though they are a very young couple, I appreciated the fact that most of the drama they dealt with was caused by outside forces not drama for the sake of drama. The supporting cast is a lot of fun and they add to the story, but donβt distract from Emily and Con.
One of the things that I really liked about this book is that itβs different. Con is not the typical hero and Emily is as much a survivor as a victim of her past. Even as he is bringing her out of her shell and helping her be stronger, she is helping him be a better person and a better fighter. It is also really sweet to see the softer side of an Alpha hero like Con. I loved watching him be so patient with Emily when it is the exact opposite of his personality elsewhere.
This is definitely a good book and I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
