The first novel in the explosive new Southern Shield series from New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight explores the intoxicating games between a female cop and a Navy SEALβ€”and the killer instincts of a secret enemy watching every move they make. Atlanta deputy Alexis Rogers and Navy SEAL Frank Murphy know all about power and restraint, necessary force, and pushing their limits. When they meet in the darkness of a BDSM club, their skills are put to use. With each successive night comes a new adrenaline rush, and while they’re falling into something perilously close to love, their games are still too private, too extreme, and too daring ever to be exposed. But their intimate lives are upended when a fellow deputy of Alex’s is killed. It’s not a tragic hazard of the job. It’s cold-blooded murder. And he’s not the last to be taken out. Now Alex and Frank have found themselves more vulnerable than everβ€”and exposed to a killer with a twisted vendetta who turns desire into the most dangerous sensation of all.

I adored Angela Knight’s paranormal and a few of her erotic stories. This one takes her erotic storytelling and combines with a pretty great dose of suspense. She does a great job of keeping me guessing whether or not the killer is going to win.

Ms. Knight also introduced a great case of secondary characters, and then just tore my heart out. I was actually impressed that she was able to get me to care that much that quickly. I think it’s because I connected with Alex so fast, so I felt her pain.

Alex is a sexual submissive, but she’s also a very strong woman and cop. She holds her own and does so with a strength that made her a very appealing heroine. I enjoyed watching her dynamic with Frank unfold. It suited both of their personalities, and felt like it stayed true to who they are.

At the core, this is a romance, with a very strong suspense element that somehow also blends a heavy dose of BDSM in there. Ms. Knight manages to pull those three different elements together smoothly so that the events in question and the romance seem to flow beautifully to create an enjoyable story that I couldn’t put down, until I finished.
