It was late in the afternoon when Parker called me into his office to work on a file for one of our biggest clients. It took a couple of hours and I kept glancing surreptitiously at my watch, wondering if I was going to have to cancel dinner with my parents. This last time, Parker caught me at it.
βSomething wrong?β he asked, raising an eyebrow.
βNo, I justββ
βHave a date with Ryker?β Parker interrupted.
βNo. My parents are coming to take me to dinner,β I said, omitting the information that Ryker was coming, too, and that he was in fact the entire reason for my parents driving in to the city.
βAh. I see.β Parker settled back into his chair from where heβd been pacing as he talked through the case and Iβd taken notes. βYou know, Iβd like to think weβre still friends, you and me.β
βWe are?β Parker and I had never discussed our relationship after Iβd left his apartmentβand his bedβin the middle of the night.
βOf course. Which is why I told Monique I wasnβt going to fire you.β
βExcuse me?β Surely I had misheard. βI thought she said I was pretty.β
βOh, she did. That was the problem. She doesnβt like the idea of me having a secretary who looks like you.β
βExecutive Administrative Assistant,β I automatically corrected him. My immediate thought was, what a bitch. My next thought was to wonder why he was telling me this.
βI told her she was being ridiculous. And youβre probably wondering why Iβm telling you this,β he said.
My internal um, yeah mustβve shown on my face.
βI like Monique,β he said. βSheβs anβ¦interesting diversion. But youβ¦you are a fixture in my life and I wouldnβt dream of firing you, especially at the whim of a temporary girlfriend.β
βIs that what she is? Your girlfriend?β
βFor the moment.β
βI see.β
βIs Ryker for the moment? Or a fixture?β he asked.
That gave me pause. Since when were we discussing our personal lives at work? Or at anyplace, for that matter?
βWhy do you care?β I asked.
βWeβre friends, Sage. I care. I just want whatβs best for you. Like you said last night, I want you to be happy, too.β
