excerpt

Teaganโ€™s bedroom door opened, and he heard her light tread on the hardwood floors as she came down the hall. He flipped the sandwiches before turning to face her. She stopped abruptly when she saw him. They stared at each other across the room, and he ran his gaze from the top of her head to the tips of her toes and up again.

Her long, dark hair waved loosely around her face, shiny from its recent wash. Her cheeks were tinted pink, but thankfully no longer red from fever, and her eyes were much brighter. Her nose and lips still looked a little raw, but overall, she looked a thousand times better.

A light blue flannel nightgown with a long line of buttons enveloped her from neck to knees. Her legs and feet were covered in fuzzy black socks that started right where her nightgown ended. They looked a little like leg warmers, but they were tight and clingy.

It was a decidedly unattractive look, nothing sexy about it, yet all he could think about was unbuttoning those tiny little buttons, one by one, until he bared her plump breasts to his gaze. Heโ€™d been fantasizing about the color and taste of her nipples for months.

Or maybe he could take the easy route, pulling that old lady nightie up and over her head so he could lay his hands on her bare ass. He was desperate to shape its round curves and touch her smooth white skin.

Teagan joined him in the kitchen, and before he could say anything, she wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head against his chest. He squeezed her to him, rubbing big circles on her back.

She had scared him last night. A lot.

Sheโ€™d been burning up, totally out of it, and none of the drugs he had poured into her mouth had seemed to help. Heโ€™d been so worried he had called Letty in the wee hours of the morning to get her opinion on whether he should take Teagan to the hospital.

He relied on Letty more than heโ€™d ever let himself depend on anyone. She had become an important part of his life, and he trusted her to give him good advice, especially since sheโ€™d raised three children.

Letty had told him to keep a close watch on Teagan, so heโ€™d slept in her room, checking on her every hour. When her fever had finally broken this morning, he had been so relieved heโ€™d felt light-headed.

The smell of burning bread drifted to his nose, and Nick reached behind him to turn off the stove. The movement pushed his chest against Teaganโ€™s, and he tried not to notice her breasts.

He was pretty sure she wasnโ€™t wearing a bra because he could feel how full and firm they were. His heart rate increased, pumping blood straight to his cock, and he stepped back to put some room between them before he had to explain why he had an erectionย .ย .ย . again.

She looked up, and he smoothed her hair away from her face. It smelled fruity, like tangerines maybe, and his taste buds quivered. He pushed down the urge to nuzzle his nose into her hair before licking his way down her neck.

โ€œThank you for taking care of me.โ€

He smiled. Her voice sounded like the offspring between a bullfrog and a goose.

โ€œYouโ€™re such a good friend,โ€ she continued.

Friend.

The smile slid from his face. He was starting to hate that fucking word, especially when Teaganโ€™s kissable lips said it.

โ€œYouโ€™re going to get sick, you know,โ€ she warned. โ€œI already gave this to Bebe.โ€

He shrugged. He didnโ€™t get sick a lot, and when he did, he rode it out alone. He remembered having strep throat in high school and being so sick he could barely move. His dad had been in New York City for a book tour, and heโ€™d been irritated when Nick had called him. He had told him to โ€œuse his head and find a doctor.โ€

Nick shook off the memory, focusing on Teaganโ€™s face. She wasnโ€™t wearing any makeup, and her skin looked dewy from the shower.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t be so blasรฉ about it when youโ€™re suffering with this plague,โ€ she predicted. โ€œYouโ€™ll blame me for giving it to you.โ€

He stared into her eyes. He already suffered from something she had given him: a bad case of lust.
