Sam’s ended up right back where he started – the small Texas town he swore he’d never step foot in again after making fast tracks to SMU. He’s not the young, gay kid he was when he left. He has a music degree now, with no job and is about to lose his dorm room… Shit.
When an old friend has him coming back to where he started, Sam struggles to deal with old memories and an unexpected reality. Things in Alvarado aren’t exactly how he remembers them, and neither is his arch nemesis Cody Greene.
When the two men get stuck together by a promise, the hated memories that Sam’s bitterly held onto for five years begin to unravel. When the dust settles, Sam and Cody have to decide if they can let go of the past to build a future.

“Right Back Where” was a nice little book. It didn’t brave any new horizons.Β  It was the tried and true gay kid moves away from a small town, swearingΒ he’d never come back, but he needs to because something sort of bad happens, and he has to meet up with his high school tormentor, who is now veryΒ different than he was back then, story.Β  Yes, yes…some people may think that is an overdone trope, but I really like them.Β  To me, they areΒ comfortable and warm, like my new fuzzy slippers.Β  I don’t ever get tired of them.

In this book, we have Sam, who left Alvarado to go to college.Β  Something quite awful happened to him in high school, and he wants to get as far awayΒ from those memories as he can.Β  However, someone very important to him is ill, and he wants to come and see her.Β  It’s too late, though.Β  Now, he’s gotΒ to get along with her son, Cody, who Sam thinks played one of the biggest roles in what happened to him to make him leave.

I’ll not give you any more than that.Β  What follows is a sad, sweet, sexy, and satisfying story.Β  Sam and Cody have chemistry, whether it’s asΒ adversaries or lovers.Β  They’ll make you cringe, but they’ll also make you smile.Β  Watching them fall for each other is a pleasure.Β  Their love scenesΒ are hot, but loving, and I was happy to watch them band together against some bigoted townspeople.

I consider “Right Back Where” as a lovely way to spend an evening.Β  It wasn’t a very long read, but it was heartwarming and sent me off to bed with aΒ pleasant happiness.Β  This was the first book from C.E. Kilgore that I’ve read, and you can be sure I’ll read more.
