Cute and funny, Be Mine is all about a young woman finally getting the chance to be with the man she’s had a crush on since she was a small child… her best friend’s brother. Not surprising and definitely not an original plot. However, it was an incredibly sweet story.
Although she hadn’t seen Mark in many years, Beth’s crush is as fresh as if he had never left and joined the Army. However, instead of making the grand entrance and unforgettable impression she’d dreamed of, she ends up tripping over her own feet and dumping a plate of hot lasagna on his lap. One mishap after another serve to make Beth memorable alright, just not in the way she was hoping. Mark may not remember his little sister’s best friend, but he can’t seem to stop thinking about the hot accident prone waitress.
Although it was an enjoyable read, there were a couple of things that just did not strike a cord with me. Why bring up the ex when it wasn’t going to go anywhere? I would have liked to see the story arch deal with that a bit more. Also, Mark and Beth date for six months yet he behaves as if her kiss is the very first kiss they share. Six months without so much as a kiss? Really? That’s a little too far-fetched. Besides these two points, I have to admit that I did enjoy the very sweet romance between Mark and Beth. It’s gratifying to read a romance that is more about the romance and less about how many times the characters can do it in one night.
I’m not sure if I would go seeking more from this author, however, if I happen to come across more of her work, I wouldn’t turn away from it. As I enjoyed it, I would definitely consider giving her work another try.
