KenzieIβm a yes girl. Get your mind out of the gutter; Iβm not talking about sex. Iβm talking about saying yes to whatever comes my way in life. So when I had the chance to move to Europe after college, I said, yes. When I had the chance to open my own lingerie line, I said, yes. And when my stepsister got diagnosed with cancer and needed me to come home and help her raise her daughter, I said, yes. Thatβs me, Kenzie β the yes girl! In every area of my life but one βLove. Always the first to leave a relationship. Will I be able to say yes to love β to Kane β to being happy? Or will I simply come undone and be stripped raw?KaneDonβt let Kenzie fool you! Sheβs a master at hiding behind a laugh and a smile. Being an attorney, I prefer the facts. This story isnβt as light and happy as my yes girl would have you believe. No laugh can sugarcoat what we are facing: Iβve lost everything. I know what itβs like to be left raw. But sometimes thatβs the only way to find love. To strip yourself down, let the other person see all your sh*t, and hope they love you anyway.
This was my first Prescott Lane book. Other reviewers have loved her books, so I figured I’d jump in.
I loved the premise of this book. Kenzie was a character that you could totally get behind. She’d given up her old life to come home and take care of her dying sister and baby niece. She never expected to find love, but she found just that when she had a run in with a local TV personality’s brother, Kade.
Kenzie has an huge abandonment issue, which causes her to keep Kade at arm’s length. She’s quick to jump to conclusions (often a very wrong one) and she doesn’t often forgive when she perceives someone has wronged another. Kade is a saint, because he is always quick to forgive Kenzie or to give her the leeway to figure out she’s wrong. It was often frustrating, but it made it hard not to like Kade.
The storyline was engaging, but was surprising in what happened with certain secondary characters. Kade and Kenzie’s relationship was realistic and easy to follow, but I wished for there to be a little more heat with them.
βIβm the good girl, very responsible, girl-next-door type.β
Should I tell her I took the virginity of the girl next door? Probably not. βI think youβre more than that,β I say, taking a step closer to her. That wasnβt a line. I really mean it. I wouldnβt be here if I didnβt think so.
I inch even closer, but she looks confused β a little like she wants me to kiss her, a little like she wants me to screw her, but mostly like she doesnβt want me to do anything more. I canβt blame her; we only met a few hours ago. Deacon is wrong about the one night stand thing. This woman isnβt looking for a hookup. Iβm not, either. One night with her wouldnβt be enough. So I take a step back, my fists clenched at my sides to redirect my energy.
βThat was my first catalog,β Kenzie says. βI plan on doing two a year.β She reaches for a sketchbook on her work table. βThis is what Iβm working on for the next line. Iβll be photographing them pretty soon. The line is inspired by menβs clothing, so pinstripes and. . . .β
She keeps talking about the different fabrics, colors, and textures she plans to use. I have no idea what she is saying, but marvel over what Iβm seeing β corsets and bustiers, vests with garter belts, bras, and G-strings. I love that these ideas, these fantasies, came out of her mind. She is so much more than she thinks, so much more than the girl next door.
Kenzie flips to another sketch, this one of a navy bra and panty set with stockings and heels. That will look perfect on her β especially bent over my office desk. My cock throbbing, I take a deep breath and try to focus on what Kenzie is saying. My eyes search the catalog pages for anything to distract me. βWhatβs this?β
βCuffs,β she says, βlike on a manβs dress shirt. But these double as handcuffs.β
Okay, thatβs it. The arts-and-crafts show is officially driving me crazy. My dick is rock hard now, and I canβt take it anymore.
