Matthew Kailen, a respected paramedic, has two rules: 1. I don’t date guys from work. 2. I don’t do relationships.
The son of a homophobic father, Matthew learned to stay deeply entrenched in the closet for his own protection. He remained under his father’s radar until his sister Meredith and her husband were killed by a drunk driver. When Matthew became the guardian of their two young children, his life got complicated.
Trent Paleck completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Lake Community Hospital outside of L.A. Despite the abundance of hot surfers and muscle studs, he longed to get back to the east coast. When a position for an Emergency Room doctor became available at Amity Hospital, in Trent’s home town, he jumped at the opportunity to move home.
Trent never expected to find what he did, when he found himself working alongside Matthew. A reluctant attraction quickly blossoms into something deeper. Can Matthew find in Trent the one thing that will cause him to break his own rules? Is Trent ready to trade in California surfers for the father of two young children? Both men are faced with what appears to be insurmountable challenges when Matthew’s father takes actions to prevent Trent from having the man he wants and Matthew the children he loves. Can they climb over the hurdles to find the love they desire?

I found this to be a rather sweet story.  There’s a lot going on, but it held my attention and gave me more than a few “awwww” moments.

Trent is an ER resident.  He’s come back to his hometown to work after going to med school in LA.  He missed the east coast, and when this position opened, he jumped on it.  Matthew is a paramedic who never left home.  He’s had a very nasty life.  His father is a militant homophobe.  His beloved sister and her husband were killed when a drunk driver plowed into their car.  They left behind two adorable children, and they specifically asked that he take them in.  In fact, he’s adopted them, and they call him Dad.

Trent wants to get to know Matthew, but Matthew isn’t really interested at first.  He doesn’t want a relationship because he’s too busy with work and the children, and even if he was to have one, he refuses to even consider anyone from work.  Trent is pretty persistent, and they wind up finding their way to each other.  I love these two men together.  It’s not an easy love they fall into.  There is a LOT going on, especially with Matthew’s family.  As I mentioned, his father is frighteningly homophobic.  He hates Matthew with a passion, and he’s constantly confronting him about it, even though there is a restraining order in place.  The two children are absolutely precious.  Adriana and Alex are very supportive of Matthew.  When he explains to him that he likes men, and that he and Trent were together, they love it.  They love Trent, and they don’t care that he’s a man.  They’re great kids.  Lots of times, kids don’t work in a romance novel.  They are either disgustingly cute, overly precocious, or a bratty demon.  Not the case here.  I also loved the character of Grace.  She’s their “nanny”, even though I won’t call them that.  She’s been by Matthew’s side from the very beginning and takes care of the children AND him.  She was sweet, understanding, loving, and wise.  She’s the kind of woman everyone would love to have as a friend.

I don’t want to give any more away.  I’ll just tell you that things begin to happen rapidly after Trent and Matthew are together.  Some good, some bad, but through the whole story, their love for each other and the children shine through.

I really enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it to everyone.
