I know how to watch my back. Iβm the only one that ever has.
India Maxwell hasnβt just moved across the countryβsheβs plummeted to the bottom rung of the social ladder. Itβs taken years to cover the mess of her home life with a veneer of popularity. Now sheβs living in one of Bostonβs wealthiest neighborhoods with her momβs fiancΓ© and his daughter, Eloise. Thanks to her soon-to-be stepsisterβs clique of friends, including Eloiseβs gorgeous, arrogant boyfriend Finn, India feels like the one thing she hoped never to be seen as again: trash.
But Indiaβs not alone in struggling to control the secrets of her past. Eloise and Finn, the schoolβs golden couple, arenβt all they seem to be. In fact, everyoneβs life is infinitely more complex than it first appears. And as India grows closer to Finn and befriends Eloise, threatening the facades that hold them together, whatβs left are truths that are brutal, beautiful, and big enough to change them foreverβ¦
Cocktails and Books received this book for free from Inkslinger PR in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect our opinion of the book or the content of our review.
A great coming of age story about acceptance, survival, trust and love.
The main characters of this book were India, Eloise and Finn. Each with their own secrets they learn to depend on each other to cope with them.
Every character was complex, down to the parents and their friends in school. I was drawn to all of them. Even though this is considered an YA book I didnβt get that vibe. The story could have been told as a NA book and it would have just been as good.
Please donβt go into this thinking that just because it is a YA book that it wonβt be as good as all of Samanthaβs more contemporary books, you would be wrong. There are no over the top sex scenes or better no sex scenes at all, but this story really didnβt need them. You still feel the intensity of certain scenes.
The only negative thing I would have to say about this book is that there is no epilogue. I wanted to see what became of these characters after school finished. Maybe Samantha will get to write for these characters again as grownups.
From New York Times bestselling author Samantha Young comes a story of friendship, identity, and acceptance that will break your heartβand make it whole again.Β Order your copy of THE IMPOSSIBLE VASTNESS OF US today!

I hated when she acted like she gave a crap.
βI donβt care who he is.β Hayley tried to fry his ass with her eyes. βYou can leave.β
Jay stared back at her with as much defiance as I did, making me like him more. He turned to me and pressed a slow, intimate kiss to the corner of my mouth. βSee you at school, babe.β
He laughed at the mischief in my eyes.
I waited until heβd brushed by Hayley without a word and I heard the front door close behind him. βNice. Thanks.β
Hayleyβs dark eyes narrowed into slits. βDonβt talk to me like that. Iβm tired, itβs been a long day and now I come home and find my daughter being mauled by some walking hormone. Am I supposed to be happy that youβre dating some guy who looks like heβs seen the inside of prison more than once?β
βWeβre not dating. Weβre just fooling around.β
βOh, well, then, why am I so upset?β She threw her hands up in exasperation.
βHayley.β
She flinched, like she always flinched when I called her by her name (so she flinched a lot). βDonβt βHayleyβ me. I have a right to be upset about this.β
βDonβt be. Iβm not serious about him. And Iβm not getting pregnant. Anyway, youβre home early.β
βThey put me on a shorter flight.β She dumped her purse on the couch as she moved farther into the room. βWeβll discuss Jay later. I need to tell you something.β
I tensed. βYeah?β
She stared pensively at me for a few seconds before finally taking a seat by my side. βIβve met someone.β
Dread instantly filled me.
Scrutinizing me for a reaction and getting none, Hayley smiled reassuringly. βHeβs wonderful. His name is Theo and he has a daughter whoβs actually your age. He lives in Boston. We met on one of my flights out there.β
My stomach churned. βHow long?β
βSeveral months ago.β
βI knew something was going on,β I muttered.
βIβm sorry I kept it from you for so longβ¦ I just wanted to make sure it was real between us.β
βAnd is it?β
βVery much so. Weβve fallen in love.β
βThatβs some long-distance relationship.β
βI stay with him when I fly out there. I see him as often as possible.β
I snorted. βAnd you think heβs faithful all the times youβre not around?β
βDonβt.β She cut a hand through the air. βThose are your trust issues, India. Not mine.β
My blood boiled with indignation. She was completely naΓ―ve if she thought for one second this guy wasnβtβ a loser. She had chosen badly before, after all. I had a right to the dread that was making me feel sick.
βI just wanted to give you a heads-up that itβs serious.β
βWhat does that even mean?β
βIt means that if this is going where I think itβs going, then that might mean a big life change for us.β
Oh, hell.
I stared at her in horror.
Hayley sighed wearily at the expression I wasnβt even trying to conceal. βIβm going to make a cup of tea. Iβm tired so weβll talk about Jay another time.β She turned but then stopped to stare at me sadly. βThanks for being so happy for me, by the way.β
That didnβt even deserve a response.
There was a time Hayley couldnβt give a damn about my happiness. I felt it only fair that I feel apathetic now about hers.
