Boss of Me turned out to be a completely different book than I expected in the beginning. I had expectations of a very Alpha centric hero book and while there were elements of that, there was also a gentleness that I had not been expecting.
Boss of Me focuses on Patton (CEO and retired military officer) as he tries to lead his company and keep two of his former soldiers afloat as they deal with post military issues.
Recent MBA grad Raquel enters the picture and proceeds to shake everything up.
Told in dual POV, this well written book dives into who Patton (and a lesser extent Raquel) is and the whys behind some of his actions. We get to see the good guy behind the gruff exterior and if that good guy is enough to win the girl.
I found myself liking and rooting for Patton to figure things out. I struggled a little with Raquel’s character – not because I didn’t like her- but because the situation she was placed in was just a little too far past realistic for someone her age and life/work experience. Factor in the age difference between these two (my guess is a good 10 years) and I just had a hard time with the idea that she would really be going toe to toe with Patton the way she did. I think I would have related to Raquel a little bit more had she been a touch older and come to the situation with more real-life experience. (in full disclosure, some of the issue I had relating to Raquel come from my own experiences entering the workforce and getting an MBA while working full time.)
Even with my leading lady issues, I enjoyed Boss of Me. The secondary cast is great and I would love to see the stories that go along with Patton’s friends/partners.
