Cocktails and Books received this book for free from Wildfire Marketing in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect our opinion of the book or the content of our review.
The focus here is on Chelsea (daughter of Savannah/Beau, sister of Ethan) and Mayson (Army buddy of Ethan).
The set up of this book was interesting- how Chelsea and Mayson came to be in close quarters was a surprise and ended up being very sweet. I enjoyed seeing these characters evolve and peel the layers back to their real feelings.
I had two things with the book that kept it from being a full four star read. The first being the size of the secondary cast – its huge! Southern Heart is a fairly short book, so there isnβt really time for keeping track of whoβs who and it is a little distracting. The second thing was that we never really understood the motive of the bad guy. It seems like the next book picks up where this one leaves off, so maybe some of this gets explained.
Even with the concerns/issues I had with the story, I enjoyed Southern Heart and am looking forward to seeing what the series has in store for us next.
Some secrets have a way of coming back and haunting us, no matter how much we try to bury them.
Chelsea
Coming back home was supposed to be normal.
Not that my life had ever been normal, but it was getting there.
Then I opened the door and found a manβbroken, bloodied, and fighting for his life.
I donβt know why, but I said I would take care of him. I had to. Needed to.
He was a mystery, showing up from out of nowhere. But he might have already stolen my heart.
Mayson Carey
The only thing I have ever wanted in my entire life was to forget who I was. Joining the military helped me do this.
Keep your head down and glide through life was my new motto. No strings, no relationships. Nothing.
Everything was working until a knock at the door had me face-to-face with the reason I was running.
So I ranβI fell into her arms, and she fell into my heart, but I know better than to think itβll last.
Some secrets have a way of coming back and haunting us, no matter how much we try to bury them.
