If thereβs one thing I know to be certain in life, itβs to expect the unexpected. I never expected to become a teen mom or have to flee a toxic relationship years later. And I certainly never expected to go head-to-head with Jacob Harris, doctor of veterinary medicine, to prove Iβm worthy of running the struggling rescue full of misfit animals I suddenly inherited.
Jacob is as smug as he is good looking, and I refuse to let that cocky grin or sharp jawline distract me. I wonβt go down without a fight, and this time, itβll be easy to stand my ground when my opponent is someone I canβt standβeven though my body reacts whenever heβs around. This time Iβm not backing down no matter how much he gets under my skin.
But the more I push, the more he pullsβ¦until I donβt know what Iβm more at a risk of losing: the rescue or my heart.

I always enjoy a good romance where the hero/heroine swear off love but find themselves in that exact spot despite their best efforts. It’s usually the fight that draws out the chemistry and makes it so enjoyable to read. Jacob and Josie definitely fought with one another, but the way their romance developed left me a bit short.
I loved Josie. She was that type of person that was determined to give something her all…despite the odds. Her daughter had that same outlook, so I was rooting for them from the very beginning to make their mark running the horse rescue they inherited. I had no doubt they would do it.
Jacob was likable enough and I appreciated the effort he made as the local equine vet to care for the animals in his area. He gave it his all, which is probably why he was so grumpy with people…the animals got all of him. But it felt like he was too jaded towards people. Maybe that was because of what he’d experienced with animal owners. Or maybe that combined with his user ex gave him the perfect storm to just be grumpy.
Whatever it was, it didn’t make Jacob the kind of hero that I’d want for Josie. He hurt her feelings one too many times and, quite frankly, she was too willing to forgive him when he did. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter how sexy you think someone is, when they constantly hurt your feelings or continue to say you can’t do something, that sexiness falls by the wayside.
This wasn’t my favorite Emily Goodwin book but it was still a solid read. This H/h match-up may not work for me, but others will enjoy it.
